A head turned, and an eyebrow furrowed, a cold smile finding the blonde’s lips. The man who had come after Niki was on the floor – or what was left of him – and she herself was covered in blood. Of course, she hadn’t bothered to lock the door of the bookstore before she killed him, and that had been her mistake. But the girl standing there didn’t seem much of a threat, and Jessica, now the one in control of Niki’s body, vaguely recognized her.

“How much of that did you see?”

– open.

“—-Mostly, it’s about certain celebrities making out with one and other… The usual celebrity mag.” [ Meaning; something trashy and boring. ]

Why would you read that?”  [ She doesn’t really care for celebrity news. You know, if she bothered to keep up with it anyway. ]

”Well uh…thanks. It’s a really sweet gesture and all. I’ll be sure to check it out when a caffeine emergency strikes.”

”Do you need help finding something?” She doesn’t want to be rude or annoying but she also doesn’t want to walk off if the woman needs help with a book.

”—-No thanks. S’like taking candy from strangers. Not that you’re strange or anything just…I’m going to shut up now.”

”Honey, I understand more than you could ever imagine… But if you change your mind, there’s a coffee shop in the back of the bookstore. Tell them to put it on Niki’s tab.“

“Very perceptive. Probably because I am tired.”

”You’re welcome to a cup of coffee. I’ll pay.”

             "You look tired.“

There’s a small smile indentured against her pale features, following the store clear to the appropriate aisle, hues occasionally reading along the titles of unrecognizable book titles. Jill didn’t read much, wasn’t her thing. Movies were always better, you got to see the action, rather than wasting several days trying to journey against paper. It was a waste a time. Though, the smile doesn’t falter, it actually widens at the sight of her cousin’s book. Just a little closer to Sidney’s point of view, are we? Finally, being able to read the woman’s fear. “Oh, do you have anything by Gale Weathers? That, or anything about the Woodsboro massacres?” Hopefully, they both, Gale and Sidney, were working on a new book — one that mentioned Jill. Now, that, that would be exciting.

”We have a little bit of everything, actually.“ For some reason, Niki could feel Jessica pushing for control.  Biting her lip she pushed back and nodded. "I can show you where you can find both. Why so interested in them?” Seeing as she had an alternate personality who ripped people apart for fun, she was no stranger to violence and bloodshed, but she couldn’t understand peoples’ obsessions, even interest, in the dark. The smile remained, but she was under great duress. Jessica was strong. And for some reason, she really wanted to meet this girl for herself. Her eyes closed and her head tilted to the side, before they reopened a harsher blue. But if Jill wasn’t watching carefully, she might not notice.

Clarisse wasn’t expecting help. She was a branded troublemaker, and she was a thief. Usually when a cop was coming after someone people grabbed them and turned them in… So, why was this person following her and telling her to prepare herself for some daring escape? Clarisse didn’t even go by her real name anymore. She had died so many times before. “W-What are you doing?” She cried out in the panic she felt. Her body was vibrating, a dry heat already rolling off her in waves. Her powers were growing active. Clarisse was trying to keep it in, but this wasn’t easy for her.

She let out a scream when the woman seemingly toppled a bookcase. That was enough to upset her control, what little she did have left. Her arms lit up in flames and her russet orbs frantically looked for an exit as she scrambled up to her feet. In the process of her movements, she began to set things ablaze. Fire was hard to control. If it wasn’t attuned to her emotions, she would’ve been fine, but no… She couldn’t handle this.

The Other shelves were beginning to fall, and Clarisse feared what was going to happen. She wasn’t even sure she could trust the woman who had just helped her, because that strength she had was not humanly possible, just like her… She could have been sent from the Government, or any number of things could be happening. She quickly began to move, fire forming in her footsteps as she was consumed by them behind the woman. “S-Stay away from me!” She made her way for the back exit, knowing that if she went for the front, she’d cause some terrible commotion.

The fact that the girl had an ability didn’t faze her, but the flames did. After all, she had died in a fire. Even though she had passed out from smoke inhalation long before the flames actually consumed her body, the leaping light still instilled horror into her veins. She stared in terror for a moment, fighting back the fear that she knew would be a catalyst into the change that was sure to come. The cops had already headed her way. The shift was almost instant. Blue hues turned to below zero, and her head tilted to the side with a smart smile.

The girl had taken off toward the back. Jessica would catch up with her easily, seeing as the back exit only led to a short alley, and to get out of it you’d have to climb over tall chain link fence. Or, you know, rip it apart. The first cop approached her and she simply smiled in return. The very thing Nicole hadn’t wanted to happen had happened; the fury had taken control, and Jessica had forced her way through the iron cage Niki had created within her.

Only minutes later, the building was up in flame and Jessica stepped out the back door, splattered in blood and ash, singed, the ends of perfect blonde hair charred where it hung down her back. “You listen here, kid, if you know what’s good for you. You’re gonna come with me. I don’t care if you trust me or not. And don’t try anything funny, because your fire might burn me but I can’t die."

image

The younger girl was right not to trust her. Not now. Maybe when it had been Niki in control, but Jessica was an unconstrained rage that could boil over at any moment. And now that she was in control she wasn’t keen on letting Niki take back over anytime soon. She stepped past the girl, ripping the metal chain links apart with her hands. If they didn’t get moving they would still be here when the place blew all to hell. And Jessica didn’t plan on dying again today.

Orbs repeatedly run against the titles of unrecognizable books against their rightful shelves, looking for one in particular. Did they even sell it? It was unfortunate Jill hasn’t been able to read her cousin’s book — it came out four years ago, maybe? Reading wasn’t Jill’s type of thing, but hey, she might have the inspiration to right her own book one day, and whose better than getting the creativity from her cousin? Her concentration crashes when a woman speaks, head instantly bobbing up and down. “Out Of Darkness, by Sidney Prescott? Do you have that in stock?”

image

"I think so.“ She nodded for Jill to follow her and headed down the long rows of shelves to the area that would house the book if they had it in stock. She scanned over the titles with a furrowed brow until her eyes fell on the letters of the correct title. "Ah, yes we have it.” She gave a bright, friendly smile and reached out, tipping the book out with a tap of her finger and handing it to the younger girl. “I haven’t read it, but I’ve heard good things,” She lied, a tactic most booksellers used. Not necessarily a tactic for the high road, but she used it all the same. “Is there anything else I can help you with, or is that all?” A dumb question, but one she was charged with asking thanks to the nature of her work.
